Is The Police No longer Our Friend?

It was more than a nightmare to the deceased’s family and shocking news to the general public to hear that an erudite lawyer Omobolanle Raheem was killed in cold blood on Christmas day allegedly by a police officer supposedly on duty. The shocking news of the unfortunate incident above has made many Nigerians, NGOs, and civil society organizations beat the drum of justice for the victim.

Although the culprit is currently being made to face the full wrath of the law, life is precious, and no amount of punishment or condemnation can bring back the erudite Lawyer. Thus, there is a need for more drastic and intentional measures to be put in place to solve this kind of occurrence in the future permanently.

Some of those measures include:

1. Police checkpoints within places other than highways should be removed with immediate effect, and violations of any kind should be punished accordingly by the police.

2. Punishment meted on an erring police officer should be made public. Often, we hear of the brutality of the police with little or no transparency on how the erring officer was punished. As a result, the evil actions persist with no deterrence.

3. Full implementation and Strict compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020.

4. Erring officers should not be given a pat on the back but should be severely and openly punished for others to learn.

5. Bribery and corrupt practices amongst officers should be abolished, and a body should be set up to monitor compliance.

It is rather disappointing and disheartening for Nigerians to feel unsafe around those who are charged with the duties and responsibilities of safeguarding their lives and properties.

For sure, Omobolanle Raheem will never be forgotten, and her demise will not be in vain.
On January 31, HRF was invited to educate the public on the responsibilities of the Nigerian citizens. It was a great time on “YOUR VIEWPOINT” TV show at NTA Channel 10, Tejuosho, Yaba, Lagos.
