NIGERIA: DERELICTION OF DUTY TO PROTECT LIVES AND RESOLVE RAPE EPIDEMIC

The recent tragic incident involving the rape and murder of Mrs. Chinwendu Amadi, a pregnant woman, near the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Imo State, highlights the urgent need for enhanced security and protection for all Nigerians. The horrifying details surrounding her death—violently assaulted and left in a bushy area—are not just an affront to human dignity but a stark reminder of the pervasive insecurity plaguing our communities.

As a human rights advocate, I unequivocally condemn this heinous act and the systemic failures that allowed such violence to occur. The Logara community's outcry for justice is valid and must not go unheard. The President General, Chief Martin Opara, rightly demands accountability from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) regarding security measures in the area. This incident serves as a wake-up call for all stakeholders involved in ensuring the safety of our citizens.

To prevent such atrocities in the future, I recommend the following measures:
1. Increased Security Presence: FAAN and local law enforcement must establish a more robust security presence at the airport and surrounding areas. Regular patrols and surveillance systems can deter criminal activities.
2. Community Engagement: Building trust and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities is essential. Regular community meetings can provide a platform for residents to voice their concerns and for authorities to address them.
3. Rapid Response Mechanisms: Implementing a swift response team to tackle emergencies can save lives. A dedicated hotline for reporting suspicious activities should be established.
4. Victim Support Services: Establishing support systems for victims of violence, including counseling and legal aid, can provide necessary assistance to those affected and encourage reporting of such crimes.
5. Public Awareness Campaigns: Educational initiatives focusing on gender-based violence and the importance of community vigilance can empower citizens to take an active role in safeguarding their environment.

This tragic loss should galvanize us into action. The safety of every Nigerian, especially vulnerable populations such as women and children, must be prioritized. We must demand accountability from authorities and ensure that our communities are secure havens, free from violence and fear.
