Injustice – Students Admitted and Dismissed for Over-Admittance

On July 10, 2025, the school authorities of the University of Calabar dismissed over 300 students from the Department of Dentistry and Dental Surgery nonchalantly, citing an over-admission beyond the quota approved by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, reported The Nation.

This decision sparked a distinct reaction from members of the public and left the affected students in a perpetual state of agony. This decision has far-reaching consequences for the affected students, who invested time and resources with the main aim of achieving their educational goals.

One may ask, who bears the responsibility for this condemnable misconduct? Why should an institution that had assumed a contractual obligation of providing a platform for students who trusted the system to award them the necessary degree be allowed to dismiss the students suddenly, based on over-admission, unilaterally?

The decision, if overlooked, sets a precedent that allows innocent students to be punished for the failure of an institution to adhere to regulatory guidelines. This will also demonstrate that the institution is not accountable to any higher regulatory body, which should ordinarily establish a check-and-balance system.

Having acknowledged an administrative lapse, it is incumbent upon the individuals responsible for this error to be held accountable. At the same time, the university makes a conscious effort to ensure that students have access to support.

It is imperative that university authorities prioritize fairness and accountability, rather than resorting to measures that will have long-lasting, devastating consequences for those affected.
