A disturbing video circulating on social media on the 16th day of October 2025 shows a woman crying inconsolably after uniformed men, allegedly from the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, stormed her roadside cooking venue, assaulted her, and confiscated her utensils, leaving her with severe burns from hot oil spill, reported X.   In the defence of the officers, the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, in person of Tokunbo Wahab, released a statement via X (Formerly Twitter) stating that the conduct of the victim contravened existing environmental and sanitation Regulations of the State.   The incident raised concerns about the balance between enforcing environmental regulations and respecting human rights. While the ministry's swift intervention is commendable, the manner of enforcement is questionable.   The use of force and coercion by law enforcement authorities not only escalates tension but also breaches public peace and erodes trust in law enforcement. It is essential to recognize that enforcing laws and regulations must not constitute a violation of other laws, including fundamental human rights. The authorities' actions in this incident appear to constitute a breach of the basic human right to dignity.   The core expectation of lawful authorities when enforcing the law is to ensure enforcement actions are proportional, lawful, and aimed at mitigating harm while following due process. Enforcing the law is not a defense of unlawful conduct but a call for the rule of law to prevail.   This incident highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to balance accountability with human dignity, ensuring that their actions respect the rights and dignity of all individuals, even when enforcing regulations. As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet emphasized, "Policing and the criminal justice system will only regain the public's trust if they are seen to uphold dignity and equality, and to protect and serve all members of communities."   To achieve this balance, law enforcement agencies must prioritize training, accountability, and community engagement. Effective strategies must be implemented to ensure that law enforcement personnel uphold human rights standards and operate within the framework of the law.   This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human dignity in law enforcement actions. Law enforcement agencies must prioritize respect for human rights and dignity in their operations to foster trust and promote a safer society.
